It was getting late but Bali refused to stop for the night. The wind beat against the two weary dwarves. The rain poured from the skies, but still Bali refused to stop. He had a feeling they must be near to the town they had seen in the distance that morning.
It was near midnight when the drenched travellers finally reached the town of Bree. The man at the gate had been a bit reluctant to allow them in but had eventually agreed, mainly due to the fact he wanted to return to his nice cosy guard hut. “Strange folk been around,” he told the Dwarves, “You never know who you can trust” Bali and his companion entered the nearest Inn they could find, it was called ‘the Prancing Pony’ After ordering a couple of pints each Bali inquired at the Bar, “I was wondering if you could give us directions to a place near here. I believe it is called Rivendell by men of these parts, but it is also known as Imladris in the elven speech?” The bar keeper was quite taken aback at a Dwarf asking after the Elves. Once he recovered from the shock he replied, “Sorry, but I aint no traveller, I’ve only heard of the place in rumours me self. Perhaps you should try asking one of those ranger folk, they seem to know the land pretty well.” With this he rushed off to serve another customer.
Bali looked around the crowded bar, wondering what a ‘ranger folk’ looked like. Eventually he spotted a likely man sitting in the corner with a sword lying next to him. Bali thought to himself, ‘Well a traveller would need to carry some sort of weapon, so I guess I may as well ask him’, slowly the two Dwarves made their way across the room.

Dirgrin sat in a corner of the crowded bar. He had only arrived in Bree this evening but had settled down quite well, it was almost a second home to him, not that he had a permanent residence anywhere. Dirgrin kept his sword, Neisa, with him at all times. It was an ancient blade and he seemed reluctant to part with it, right now he even had the sword lying on the seat next to him. As his eyes moved round the room they stopped on two dwarves, both of which were heading towards him. “What can I do for gentlemen?” he asked when they reached the table. The slightly older Dwarf replied, “Do you know the way to Rivendell? We which to get there as soon as possible” Dirgrin thought about the proposal, ‘He had been looking forward to a rest, he didn’t really want to go back into the wild yet. But another part of his mind said maybe he should help those who need help.’ He looked at the Dwarves, “My name is Dirgrin, I’m one of the rangers of Eriador. If you wish to go to Rivendell then I shall help you. When do you want to leave?”<br>____________________________________________
Bali nodded to the ranger, “Thank you my friend, I am Bali and this is my cousin Grillin. We come from the lonely mountain. On our passage here we got lost and now I wish to hurry onwards. I want to leave as soon as possible.”
“Very well Bali, we leave at dawn, two days from now,” replied Dirgrin, “I suggest you rest while we can, it will be a hard journey, evil still wanders in these parts. And now Gentlemen, I must leave you, I have things to sort out before we depart”

Amras Telemnar pulled his cloak tighter about him as he surveyed the skies. After getting two eyefulls of water he made the deduction that it wasn't going to stop raining anytime soon. He viewed the two dwarves up ahead with distaste, "they are probably going to Bree" he thought, "and the Prancing Pony at that." Amras was going to go through Bree and to Rivendell to visit some friends.
Not wanting to be hasseled by the gate keeper like the dwarves were, Amras stealthily climbed the gate and made his way to the Prancing Pony. He entered the common room and looked around. There were the two dwarves he had seen earlier, talking to a ranger in a corner. He leaned up against the bar and watched the small group. "Anything I can do for you?" asked the bar keeper. Amras' attention was still on the group. "No.....no thank you." he said. The dwarves got up and left the room.
Amras knew many rangers from his travels in the wild, he wondered if this was one he knew, so he made his way over to the table. Amras recognized the ranger, it was his friend, Drigrin. He sat down without saying anything and without being invited. Drigrin couldn't see who it was, as Amras had his hood pulled down, and gave him a "who do you think you are and what do you think you are doing look?" The elf pulled his hood back and said "Hello there Drigrin." A smile broke out on the man's face. "Amras! What a surprise. You have some nerve pulling something like that in a place like this."
"Oooh I can handle myself. Mind if I ask what that was all about?" asked Amras as he nodded in the direction the dwarves went.
"Just two dwarves wanting an escort to Rivendell. Very odd indeed." Said Drigrin. "You want to come along if you aren't doing anything? I could use the company of an old friend."
"Actually, I was going to Rivendell myself....I will be frank though, I don't like the idea of travelling with dwarves and I'm sure they won't like travelling with me, but since you will be there I shall go, but only to help out."
"Thanks" said Drigrin. "It won't be that bad. Anyways, they are looking for help and you have always helped people who need it."
"Yes, you're right about that." replied Amras. He sighed as he leaned back. He had a feeling this journey was going to end up being much more than it seemed.

Soon after Amras had agreed to accompany him, Dirgrin decided that it was time he went to bed, he had spent a month in the wild with no proper abode which made the prospect of sleeping in a real bed even greater. He bid Amras a good night before retiring to his room.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the morning, Dirgrin began making preparations for the journey. He refilled his pack with supplies of water and food. He spent an hour ensuring his weapons were sharp and solid. He restrung his short bow and even had a wash. After meeting with Amras for lunch at the Prancing Pony he toook his leave once more and sought out the two dwarves. He found Bali in his room, resting. "Come with me." He said, "I still need to sort out a couple of things and was wondering if you had any, money of any description."
Bali was quite amused at the question. "Why of course," he replied, "I never go any hwere without a few riches. Why? What do you need money for?"
Dirgrin was relieved at knowing the dwarves had money with them. With a small smile he said, "For horses. You did not expect a weary ranger to walk all the way to Rivendell carrying baggage. It'll be much quicker to buy or hire a couple of horses and ride."
Panic spread through Bali's face, "Ride!? You expect me to ride? As in ride one of them big horse things!?" Bali had never riden a horse before and did not want to start now.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dirgrin had come to an agreement with Bali. They would take two horses with them, to carry baggage and to escape if the worst came to the worst. He made his way accross the busy street and entered the stables.

Grillin was too frightened by the thought of haveing to ride horses but didn't show it as much as Bali did. Grillin just nodded trieing to show as little fear as possible and was relieved when Bali and Dirgrin decided to use the horses only to carry luggage.
Grillin never was a good social person and didn't talk much. He always wanted to appear tough no matter the risk or danger.

Bali handed the last of the supplies to Dirgrin who loaded them onto the horse. They were almost ready to leave. All that was left to do was wait for the others and then they would be off.
While they were waiting, Dirgrin ensured Neisa was properly attached to his belt and that his bow, which was amongst the luggage, was easily accesible if it was needed.
